Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.47/6.10.6. This affects the function select_local_address of the component mptcp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mptcp: pm: avoid possible UaF when selecting endp select_local_address() and select_signal_address() both select an endpoint entry from the list inside an RCU protected section, but return a reference to it, to be read later on. If the entry is dereferenced after the RCU unlock, reading info could cause a Use-after-Free. A simple solution is to copy the required info while inside the RCU protected section to avoid any risk of UaF later. The address ID might need to be modified later to handle the ID0 case later, so a copy seems OK to deal with.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-44974 since 08/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/21/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208053 (Amazon Linux 2 : kernel (ALASKERNEL-5.15-2024-055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.48 or 6.10.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9a9afbbc3fbf/0201d65d9806/48e50dcbcbaa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
