Linux Kernel up to 6.1.106/6.6.47/6.10.6 osnoise_free_top null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.106/6.6.47/6.10.6. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function osnoise_free_top. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rtla/osnoise: Prevent NULL dereference in error handling If the "tool->data" allocation fails then there is no need to call osnoise_free_top() and, in fact, doing so will lead to a NULL dereference.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-45002 since 08/21/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208099 (Debian dsa-5782 : affs-modules-6.1.0-21-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.107, 6.6.48 or 6.10.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fc575212c6b7/753f1745146e/abdb9ddaaab4/90574d2a6759 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (208099). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
