Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.19 (Operating System). Affected is the function do_coredump of the file fs/exec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The do_coredump function in fs/exec.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.19 sets the flag variable to O_EXCL but does not use it, which allows context-dependent attackers to modify arbitrary files via a rewrite attack during a core dump.
The issue has been introduced in 11/29/2006. The weakness was released 12/18/2006 by Alexey Dobriyan (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6304 since 12/05/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67988 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2010-0046)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118072 (VMware ESX Service Console Third Party Updates (VMSA-2010-0009)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
