A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8/2.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function js_dtoa of the component Direct3D. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The js_dtoa function in Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.1, 1.5.x before 1.5.0.9, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.7 overwrites memory instead of exiting when the floating point precision is reduced, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via any plugins that reduce the precision.
The weakness was released 12/19/2006 by Frederik Reiss (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2006-68 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-6499 since 12/13/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24292 (Debian DSA-1253-1 : mozilla-firefox - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165111 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird (SUSE-SA:2006:080)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9089.
