Linux Kernel up to 6.10.7 binfmt_elf_fdpic /proc//auxv create_elf_fdpic_tables buffer size

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.7. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function create_elf_fdpic_tables of the file /proc//auxv of the component binfmt_elf_fdpic. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-131. The product does not correctly calculate the size to be used when allocating a buffer, which could lead to a buffer overflow. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: binfmt_elf_fdpic: fix AUXV size calculation when ELF_HWCAP2 is defined create_elf_fdpic_tables() does not correctly account the space for the AUX vector when an architecture has ELF_HWCAP2 defined. Prior to the commit 10e29251be0e ("binfmt_elf_fdpic: fix /proc//auxv") it resulted in the last entry of the AUX vector being set to zero, but with that change it results in a kernel BUG. Fix that by adding one to the number of AUXV entries (nitems) when ELF_HWCAP2 is defined.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-46684 since 09/11/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/20/2024).

Upgrading to version 6.10.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c507da85e4f8/c6a09e342f8e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
