Linux Kernel 2.4 File Descriptors memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4. Impacted is an unknown function of the component File Descriptors. Performing a manipulation results in memory allocation. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2005-3660. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion and panic) by creating a large number of connected file descriptors or socketpairs and setting a large data transfer buffer, then preventing Linux from being able to finish the transfer by causing the process to become a zombie, or closing the file descriptor without closing an associated reference.

The weakness was disclosed 12/22/2005 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-3660 since 11/18/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 254310 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2005-3660), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23835), Tenable (254310), SecurityFocus (BID 16041†), Secunia (SA18205†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015402†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
