Linux Kernel up to 6.10.8 typec ucsi_register_altmode null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.8. This affects the function ucsi_register_altmode of the component typec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: typec: ucsi: Fix null pointer dereference in trace ucsi_register_altmode checks IS_ERR for the alt pointer and treats NULL as valid. When CONFIG_TYPEC_DP_ALTMODE is not enabled, ucsi_register_displayport returns NULL which causes a NULL pointer dereference in trace. Rather than return NULL, call typec_port_register_altmode to register DisplayPort alternate mode as a non-controllable mode when CONFIG_TYPEC_DP_ALTMODE is not enabled.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-46719 since 09/11/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208053 (Amazon Linux 2 : kernel (ALASKERNEL-5.15-2024-055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.284, 5.10.226, 5.15.167, 6.1.109, 6.6.50 or 6.10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8095bf0579ed/7e64cabe81c3/3aa56313b0de/b4243c05d7e3/3b9f2d9301ae/99331fe68a8e/99516f76db48 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (208053) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-2173). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
