Google Protocol Buffers Parser recursion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

There is no available exploit. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Protocol Buffers, protobuf-java, protobuf-javalite, protobuf-kotlin, protobuf-kotllin-lite and google-protobuf Gem and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Any project that parses untrusted Protocol Buffers data containing an arbitrary number of nested groups / series of SGROUP tags can corrupted by exceeding the stack limit i.e. StackOverflow. Parsing nested groups as unknown fields with DiscardUnknownFieldsParser or Java Protobuf Lite parser, or against Protobuf map fields, creates unbounded recursions that can be abused by an attacker.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-7254 since 07/29/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209544 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 Security Update : protobuf (SUSE-SU-2024:3746-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cc8b3483a5584b3301e3d43d17eb59704857ffaa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209544), EUVD (EUVD-2024-2741) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0813). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
