Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2005-1918. There is not any exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

The original patch for a GNU tar directory traversal vulnerability (CVE-2002-0399) in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 2.1 uses an "incorrect optimization" that allows user-assisted attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted tar file, probably involving "/../" sequences with a leading "/".

The bug was discovered . The weakness was released 12/31/2005 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-1918 since 06/08/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13148 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20965 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 : tar (RHSA-2006:0195)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117760 (CentOS Security Update for tar (CESA-2006:0195)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (20965), SecurityFocus (BID 5834†), OSVDB (9063†), Secunia (SA18988†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015655†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-16990 and VDB-19040. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
