Details
A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
The original patch for a GNU tar directory traversal vulnerability (CVE-2002-0399) in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 2.1 uses an "incorrect optimization" that allows user-assisted attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted tar file, probably involving "/../" sequences with a leading "/".
The bug was discovered . The weakness was released 12/31/2005 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-1918 since 06/08/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13148 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
