Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenPrinting libcupsfilters up to 2.1b1. This issue affects the function cfGetPrinterAttributes5 of the component IPP Attribute Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
CUPS is a standards-based, open-source printing system, and `libcupsfilters` contains the code of the filters of the former `cups-filters` package as library functions to be used for the data format conversion tasks needed in Printer Applications. The `cfGetPrinterAttributes5` function in `libcupsfilters` does not sanitize IPP attributes returned from an IPP server. When these IPP attributes are used, for instance, to generate a PPD file, this can lead to attacker controlled data to be provided to the rest of the CUPS system.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-47076 since 09/17/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207865 (RHEL OpenPrinting cups-filters (RHSB-2024:002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207865) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-2240). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
