Linux Kernel up to 6.6.50/6.10.9 ufshcd_async_scan denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.50/6.10.9. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ufshcd_async_scan. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: ufs: core: Remove SCSI host only if added If host tries to remove ufshcd driver from a UFS device it would cause a kernel panic if ufshcd_async_scan fails during ufshcd_probe_hba before adding a SCSI host with scsi_add_host and MCQ is enabled since SCSI host has been defered after MCQ configuration introduced by commit 0cab4023ec7b ("scsi: ufs: core: Defer adding host to SCSI if MCQ is supported"). To guarantee that SCSI host is removed only if it has been added, set the scsi_host_added flag to true after adding a SCSI host and check whether it is set or not before removing it.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-46843 since 09/11/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210940 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3984-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.51 or 6.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2f49e05d6b58/3844586e9bd9/7cbff570dbe8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
