A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in BlueCoat Webproxy 4.0/5.0/5.1/5.2/6.0 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Web Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in BlueCoat (a) WinProxy before 6.1a and (b) the web console access functionality in ProxyAV before 2.4.2.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long Host: header.
The bug was discovered 12/07/2005. The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2006 by fistfuxxer (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-4085. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at metasploit.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 24 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20393 (WinProxy < 6.1a Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62053 (Blue Coat Systems WinProxy Multiple Vulnerabilites).
Upgrading to version 6.1a eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 5997. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4084.
