A vulnerability was found in cocoon up to 0.3.x. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Encryption. Versions of the package cocoon before 0.4.0 are vulnerable to Reusing a Nonce, Key Pair in Encryption when the encrypt, wrap, and dump functions are sequentially called. An attacker can generate the same ciphertext by creating a new encrypted message with the same cocoon object. **Note:** The issue does NOT affect objects created with Cocoon::new which utilizes ThreadRng.
It is possible to read the advisory at security.snyk.io. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-21530 since 12/22/2023. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 0.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1b6392173ce35db4736a94b62b2d2973f9a71441 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
