Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux and NetBSD (Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function settimeofday. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The securelevels implementation in NetBSD 2.1 and earlier, and Linux 2.6.15 and earlier, allows local users to bypass time setting restrictions and set the clock backwards by setting the clock ahead to the maximum unixtime value (19 Jan 2038), which then wraps around to the minimum value (13 Dec 1901), which can then be set ahead to the desired time, aka "settimeofday() time wrap."
The weakness was published 12/31/2005 by Markus Vervier (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4352 since 12/19/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24036), SecurityFocus (BID 16170†), Secunia (SA25691†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015454†). Similar entries are available at VDB-33399 and VDB-36080. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
