Details
A vulnerability was found in libmail-audit-perl 2.1-5 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function mail::audit of the component Logging. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Mail::Audit module in libmail-audit-perl 2.1-5, when logging is enabled without a default log file specified, uses predictable log filenames, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the [PID]-audit.log temporary file.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2006. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2005 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4536 since 12/28/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22826 (Debian DSA-960-3 : libmail-audit-perl - insecure temporary file creation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
