Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server (VCS) Expressway. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A vulnerability in the restricted shell of Cisco Expressway Series could allow an authenticated, local attacker to perform command injection attacks on the underlying operating system and elevate privileges to root. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have Administrator-level credentials with read-write privileges on an affected device. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a series of crafted CLI commands. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to escape the restricted shell and gain root privileges on the underlying operating system of the affected device. Note: Cisco Expressway Series refers to Cisco Expressway Control (Expressway-C) devices and Cisco Expressway Edge (Expressway-E) devices.

The advisory is shared for download at sec.cloudapps.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-20492 since 11/08/2023. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216525 (Cisco Expressway Series Privilege Escalation (cisco-sa-expw-escalation-3bkz77bD)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
