This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-47668. No exploit exists.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.10.9. This issue affects the function __genradix_ptr_alloc in the library lib/generic-radix-tree.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lib/generic-radix-tree.c: Fix rare race in __genradix_ptr_alloc() If we need to increase the tree depth, allocate a new node, and then race with another thread that increased the tree depth before us, we'll still have a preallocated node that might be used later. If we then use that node for a new non-root node, it'll still have a pointer to the old root instead of being zeroed - fix this by zeroing it in the cmpxchg failure path.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-47668 since 09/30/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210006 (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7088-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.284, 5.10.226, 5.15.167, 6.1.110, 6.6.51 or 6.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0f27f4f44539/99418ec776a3/ad5ee9feebc2/ebeff038744c/d942e855324a/0f078f8ca93b/b2f11c6f3e1f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210006) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2855). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
