Details
A vulnerability was found in Eclipse Jetty up to 12.0.11. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component URL Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper validation of syntactic correctness of input vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-1286. The product receives input that is expected to be well-formed - i.e., to comply with a certain syntax - but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input complies with the syntax. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Eclipse Jetty is a lightweight, highly scalable, Java-based web server and Servlet engine . It includes a utility class, HttpURI, for URI/URL parsing. The HttpURI class does insufficient validation on the authority segment of a URI. However the behaviour of HttpURI differs from the common browsers in how it handles a URI that would be considered invalid if fully validated against the RRC. Specifically HttpURI and the browser may differ on the value of the host extracted from an invalid URI and thus a combination of Jetty and a vulnerable browser may be vulnerable to a open redirect attack or to a SSRF attack if the URI is used after passing validation checks.
The weakness was disclosed by zer0yu as 25. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-6763 since 07/15/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
