Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 IFRAME XML race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component IFRAME XML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the msxml3 module in Microsoft XML Core Services 3.0, as used in Internet Explorer 6 and other applications, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via many nested tags in an XML document in an IFRAME, when synchronous document rendering is frequently disrupted with asynchronous events, as demonstrated using a JavaScript timer, which can trigger NULL pointer dereferences or memory corruption, aka "MSXML Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 01/09/2007 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0099 since 01/08/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at lcamtuf.coredump.cx. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34744 (MS08-069: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (955218)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90466 (Microsoft XML Core Services Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-069)).

Applying the patch MS07-004 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6548.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45557), Tenable (34744), SecurityFocus (BID 21872†), OSVDB (50279†) and Secunia (SA23655†). The entries VDB-44976, VDB-44975 and VDB-85073 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
