A vulnerability was found in BEA WebLogic Server up to 8.1 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file username/password of the component Password Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 8.1 SP5 and earlier, and 7.0 SP6 and earlier, when using username/password authentication, does not lock out a username after the maximum number of invalid login attempts, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess the password.

The bug was discovered 10/11/2005. The weakness was released 12/31/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-4767 since 03/31/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 81 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86720 (BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express Multiple Vulnerabilities).
