SuSE Linux 9.3/10.0 ld_library_path LD_LIBRARY_PATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in SuSE Linux 9.3/10.0 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality in the library ld_library_path. The manipulation of the argument LD_LIBRARY_PATH with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple untrusted search path vulnerabilities in SUSE Linux 9.3 and 10.0, and possibly other distributions, cause the working directory to be added to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which might allow local users to execute arbitrary code via (1) beagle, (2) tomboy, or (3) blam. NOTE: in August 2007, the tomboy vector was reported for other distributions.

The weakness was shared 08/16/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4790 since 04/26/2006. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/07/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28287 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : tomboy (tomboy-4698)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36054), Tenable (28287), SecurityFocus (BID 25341†), OSVDB (39577†) and Secunia (SA26480†). The entries VDB-28100, VDB-28098 and VDB-28097 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
