Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.112/6.6.53/6.10.12/6.11.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function find_asymmetric_key. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KEYS: prevent NULL pointer dereference in find_asymmetric_key() In find_asymmetric_key(), if all NULLs are passed in the id_{0,1,2} arguments, the kernel will first emit WARN but then have an oops because id_2 gets dereferenced anyway. Add the missing id_2 check and move WARN_ON() to the final else branch to avoid duplicate NULL checks. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with Svace static analysis tool.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-47743 since 09/30/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213470 (Debian dla-4008 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.113, 6.6.54, 6.10.13 or 6.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3322fa8f2aa4/a3765b497a4f/13b5b401ead9/0d3b0706ada1/70fd1966c93b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (213470) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
