Linux Kernel up to 6.11.2 AMD Display set_output_gamma null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function set_output_gamma of the component AMD Display. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Add NULL check for function pointer in dcn401_set_output_transfer_func This commit adds a null check for the set_output_gamma function pointer in the dcn401_set_output_transfer_func function. Previously, set_output_gamma was being checked for null, but then it was being dereferenced without any null check. This could lead to a null pointer dereference if set_output_gamma is null. To fix this, we now ensure that set_output_gamma is not null before dereferencing it. We do this by adding a null check for set_output_gamma before the call to set_output_gamma.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-49910 since 10/21/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213095 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS : Linux kernel (OEM) vulnerabilities (USN-7170-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.11.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d8ee900b92b6/dd340acd42c2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
