Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.2. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function hda_sdw_machine_select. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: Intel: soc-acpi-intel-rpl-match: add missing empty item There is no links_num in struct snd_soc_acpi_mach {}, and we test !link->num_adr as a condition to end the loop in hda_sdw_machine_select(). So an empty item in struct snd_soc_acpi_link_adr array is required.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-50011 since 10/21/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213507 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS : Linux kernel (OEM) vulnerabilities (USN-7187-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.11.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch aa3109ee91fe/5afc29ba44fd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
