Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 XmlHttpRequest Object first authentication spoofing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation of the argument first with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Internet Explorer 6.0, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to bypass the same origin security policy and make requests outside of the intended domain by calling open on an XMLHttpRequest object (Microsoft.XMLHTTP) and using tab, newline, and carriage return characters within the first argument (method name), which is supported by some proxy servers that convert tabs to spaces. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged to conduct referer spoofing, HTTP Request Smuggling, and other attacks.

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was published 12/31/2005 by Amit Klein as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-4827 since 02/07/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
