Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.12. Affected is the function nci_add_new_protocol of the file net/nfc/nci/ntf.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFC: nci: Bounds check struct nfc_target arrays While running under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE=y, syzkaller reported: memcpy: detected field-spanning write (size 129) of single field "target->sensf_res" at net/nfc/nci/ntf.c:260 (size 18) This appears to be a legitimate lack of bounds checking in nci_add_new_protocol(). Add the missing checks.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-48967 since 08/22/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/18/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212567 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:4100-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.336, 4.14.302, 4.19.269, 5.4.227, 5.10.159, 5.15.83 or 6.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6b37f0dc0638/dbdcfb9f6748/cff35329070b/677843470694/27eb2d7a1b99/908b2da426fe/f41547546db9/e329e71013c9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (212567) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
