A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.12. Affected by this issue is the function can_rx_register. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: af_can: fix NULL pointer dereference in can_rcv_filter Analogue to commit 8aa59e355949 ("can: af_can: fix NULL pointer dereference in can_rx_register()") we need to check for a missing initialization of ml_priv in the receive path of CAN frames. Since commit 4e096a18867a ("net: introduce CAN specific pointer in the struct net_device") the check for dev->type to be ARPHRD_CAN is not sufficient anymore since bonding or tun netdevices claim to be CAN devices but do not initialize ml_priv accordingly.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-48977 since 08/22/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.4.227, 5.10.159, 5.12, 5.15.83 or 6.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3982652957e8/c42221efb115/c142cba37de2/fcc63f2f7ee3/0acc442309a0 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
