This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2022-48994. No exploit is available.
It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.12 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function seq_copy_in_user of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a control flow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-670. The code contains a control flow path that does not reflect the algorithm that the path is intended to implement, leading to incorrect behavior any time this path is navigated. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: seq: Fix function prototype mismatch in snd_seq_expand_var_event With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed. seq_copy_in_user() and seq_copy_in_kernel() did not have prototypes matching snd_seq_dump_func_t. Adjust this and remove the casts. There are not resulting binary output differences. This was found as a result of Clang's new -Wcast-function-type-strict flag, which is more sensitive than the simpler -Wcast-function-type, which only checks for type width mismatches.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-48994 since 08/22/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/18/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 232182 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7332-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.336, 4.14.302, 4.19.269, 5.4.227, 5.10.159, 5.15.83 or 6.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b38486e82ecb/e385360705a0/2f46e95bf344/63badfed2002/15c42ab8d43a/fccd454129f6/13ee8fb5410b/05530ef7cf7c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (232182) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
