Linux Kernel up to 6.11.3 switchtec_ntb_add use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.226/5.15.167/6.1.112/6.6.56/6.11.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function switchtec_ntb_add. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntb: ntb_hw_switchtec: Fix use after free vulnerability in switchtec_ntb_remove due to race condition In the switchtec_ntb_add function, it can call switchtec_ntb_init_sndev function, then &sndev->check_link_status_work is bound with check_link_status_work. switchtec_ntb_link_notification may be called to start the work. If we remove the module which will call switchtec_ntb_remove to make cleanup, it will free sndev through kfree(sndev), while the work mentioned above will be used. The sequence of operations that may lead to a UAF bug is as follows: CPU0 CPU1 | check_link_status_work switchtec_ntb_remove | kfree(sndev); | | if (sndev->link_force_down) | // use sndev Fix it by ensuring that the work is canceled before proceeding with the cleanup in switchtec_ntb_remove.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-50059 since 10/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/23/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210940 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3984-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.227, 5.15.168, 6.1.113, 6.6.57 or 6.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b65018968782/92728fceefda/3ae45be84924/fa840ba4bd9f/177925d9c871/e51aded92d42 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210940) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
