randombit Botan up to 3.5.x ghash.cpp control flow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in randombit Botan up to 3.5.x. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality in the library lib/utils/ghash/ghash.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a control flow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-670. The code contains a control flow path that does not reflect the algorithm that the path is intended to implement, leading to incorrect behavior any time this path is navigated. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

Botan before 3.6.0, when certain LLVM versions are used, has compiler-induced secret-dependent control flow in lib/utils/ghash/ghash.cpp in GHASH in AES-GCM. There is a branch instead of an XOR with carry. This was observed for Clang in LLVM 15 on RISC-V.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-50382 since 10/23/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209976 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : Botan (openSUSE-SU-2024:0343-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
