Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 7.0/7.1/7.2/8.0/8.1 (Database Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function satencrypt of the component Administration. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the SATENCRYPT function in IBM DB2 8.1, when Satellite Administration (SATADMIN) is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long parameter.
The bug was discovered 10/06/2004. The weakness was presented 12/31/2005 by David Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4867 since 10/06/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/02/2019).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15486 (IBM DB2 < 8 Fix Pack 7a Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3277.
