IBM DB2 8.1 to_date second null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4869. Furthermore, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in IBM DB2 8.1 (Database Software). Affected is the function to_date. The manipulation of the argument second with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The (1) to_char and (2) to_date function in IBM DB2 8.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (application crash) via an empty string in the second parameter, which causes a null pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 10/06/2004. The weakness was published 12/31/2005 by Chris Anley with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-4869 since 10/06/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15486 (IBM DB2 < 8 Fix Pack 7a Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17614), Exploit-DB (24677), Tenable (15486), SecurityFocus (BID 11400†) and OSVDB (12755†).
