Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.4. Affected by this issue is the function ma35_pinctrl_dt_node_to_map_func of the component pinctrl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pinctrl: nuvoton: fix a double free in ma35_pinctrl_dt_node_to_map_func() 'new_map' is allocated using devm_* which takes care of freeing the allocated data on device removal, call to .dt_free_map = pinconf_generic_dt_free_map double frees the map as pinconf_generic_dt_free_map() calls pinctrl_utils_free_map(). Fix this by using kcalloc() instead of auto-managed devm_kcalloc().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-50071 since 10/21/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/02/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216493 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6441d9c3d71b/3fd976afe974 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
