CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in X.org X Server up to 21.1.13 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function _XkbSetCompatMap of the component Bitmap Handler. The manipulation of the argument sym_interpret with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the X.org server. Due to improperly tracked allocation size in _XkbSetCompatMap, a local attacker may be able to trigger a buffer overflow condition via a specially crafted payload, leading to denial of service or local privilege escalation in distributions where the X.org server is run with root privileges.

The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-9632 since 10/08/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209888 (Debian dsa-5800 : xnest - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 21.1.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 85b776571487f52e756f68a069c768757369bfe3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitlab.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209888) and EUVD (EUVD-2024-50449). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.

Do you think it is appropriate to add the following cpe:"x.org:xorg-server" to the vulnerability?
The official post at https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2024/q4/43 mentions "X Server" and recent CVEs enriched by NVD also tend to prefer "x.org:x_server" only. The NIST CPE Dictionary appears to be outdated and/or redundant.
