Linux Kernel up to 6.11.3 drivers/net/netconsole.c write_ext_msg iteration

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.3. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function write_ext_msg of the file drivers/net/netconsole.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a iteration vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-834. The product performs an iteration or loop without sufficiently limiting the number of times that the loop is executed. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: netconsole: fix wrong warning A warning is triggered when there is insufficient space in the buffer for userdata. However, this is not an issue since userdata will be sent in the next iteration. Current warning message: ------------[ cut here ]------------ WARNING: CPU: 13 PID: 3013042 at drivers/net/netconsole.c:1122 write_ext_msg+0x3b6/0x3d0 ? write_ext_msg+0x3b6/0x3d0 console_flush_all+0x1e9/0x330 The code incorrectly issues a warning when this_chunk is zero, which is a valid scenario. The warning should only be triggered when this_chunk is negative.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-50092 since 10/21/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216493 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 712a3af37102/d94785bb46b6 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
