Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.5. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Memory Access Handler. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-50132. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.5. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the component Memory Access Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing/probes: Fix MAX_TRACE_ARGS limit handling When creating a trace_probe we would set nr_args prior to truncating the arguments to MAX_TRACE_ARGS. However, we would only initialize arguments up to the limit. This caused invalid memory access when attempting to set up probes with more than 128 fetchargs. Return an error when there are too many arguments instead of silently truncating.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-50132 since 10/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216493 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6bc24db74fe4/08ccd1a57c4d/73f35080477e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (216493) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3339). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
