Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.169/6.1.114/6.6.58/6.11.5. Affected by this vulnerability is the function taprio_change. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: sched: fix use-after-free in taprio_change() In 'taprio_change()', 'admin' pointer may become dangling due to sched switch / removal caused by 'advance_sched()', and critical section protected by 'q->current_entry_lock' is too small to prevent from such a scenario (which causes use-after-free detected by KASAN). Fix this by prefer 'rcu_replace_pointer()' over 'rcu_assign_pointer()' to update 'admin' immediately before an attempt to schedule freeing.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-50127 since 10/21/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/22/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211829 (CentOS 9 : kernel-5.14.0-533.el9), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.15.170, 6.1.115, 6.6.59 or 6.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 999612996df2/fe371f084073/0d4c0d2844e4/2240f9376f20/f504465970ae is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (211829) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3339). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
