Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.169/6.1.114/6.6.58/6.11.5. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function snd_hda_gen_add_kctl of the component cs8409. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: hda/cs8409: Fix possible NULL dereference If snd_hda_gen_add_kctl fails to allocate memory and returns NULL, then NULL pointer dereference will occur in the next line. Since dolphin_fixups function is a hda_fixup function which is not supposed to return any errors, add simple check before dereference, ignore the fail. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-50160 since 10/21/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
