A vulnerability was found in Brother MFC-J491DW C1806180757. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Password Hash Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication replay vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-294. A capture-replay flaw exists when the design of the product makes it possible for a malicious user to sniff network traffic and bypass authentication by replaying it to the server in question to the same effect as the original message (or with minor changes). An issue was discovered on Brother MFC-J491DW C1806180757 devices. The printer's web-interface password hash can be retrieved without authentication, because the response header of any failed login attempt returns an incomplete authorization cookie. The value of the authorization cookie is the MD5 hash of the password in hexadecimal. An attacker can easily derive the true MD5 hash from this, and use offline cracking attacks to obtain administrative access to the device.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-20457 since 02/17/2020. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
