It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.6 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ocfs2_truncate_inline. The manipulation of the argument value with an unknown input leads to a data authenticity vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-345. The product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: pass u64 to ocfs2_truncate_inline maybe overflow Syzbot reported a kernel BUG in ocfs2_truncate_inline. There are two reasons for this: first, the parameter value passed is greater than ocfs2_max_inline_data_with_xattr, second, the start and end parameters of ocfs2_truncate_inline are "unsigned int". So, we need to add a sanity check for byte_start and byte_len right before ocfs2_truncate_inline() in ocfs2_remove_inode_range(), if they are greater than ocfs2_max_inline_data_with_xattr return -EINVAL.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-50218 since 10/21/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211777 (Debian dsa-5818 : affs-modules-6.1.0-21-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.323, 5.4.285, 5.10.229, 5.15.171, 6.1.116, 6.6.60 or 6.11.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 27d95867bee8/95fbed8ae8c3/70767689ec6e/ecd62f684386/2fe5d62e122b/88f97a4b5843/0b6b8c205578/bc0a2f3a73fc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (211777) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3397). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
