A vulnerability was found in Firebase JavaScript SDK up to 10.8.x and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation of the argument _authTokenSyncURL with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Firebase JavaScript SDK utilizes a "FIREBASE_DEFAULTS" cookie to store configuration data, including an "_authTokenSyncURL" field used for session synchronization. If this cookie field is preset via an attacker by any other method, the attacker can manipulate the "_authTokenSyncURL" to point to their own server and it would allow am actor to capture user session data transmitted by the SDK. We recommend upgrading Firebase JS SDK at least to 10.9.0.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-11023 since 11/08/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
Upgrading to version 10.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at firebase.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
