A vulnerability was found in Foo Labs Xpdf (Document Reader Software) (unknown version). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the file splash.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Splash.cc in xpdf, as used in other products such as (1) poppler, (2) kdegraphics, (3) gpdf, (4) pdfkit.framework, and others, allows attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted splash images that produce certain values that exceed the width or height of the associated bitmap.
The weakness was shared 01/30/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0301. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20895 (GLSA-200602-05 : KPdf: Heap based overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117756 (CentOS Security Update for kdegraphics (CESA-2006:0206)).
