Module::ScanDeps up to 1.35 Pesky Pipe os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Module::ScanDeps up to 1.35. This affects an unknown function of the component Pesky Pipe Handler. Performing a manipulation results in os command injection. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2024-10224. The attack must be initiated from a local position. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Module::ScanDeps up to 1.35. This affects some unknown processing of the component Pesky Pipe Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Qualys discovered that if unsanitized input was used with the library Modules::ScanDeps, before version 1.36 a local attacker could possibly execute arbitrary shell commands by open()ing a "pesky pipe" (such as passing "commands|" as a filename) or by passing arbitrary strings to eval().

This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-10224 since 10/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211605 (Debian dla-3958 : libmodule-scandeps-perl - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.36 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (211605). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.

Qualys affirms LPEs in needrestart also for CVE-2024-10224. Maybe this vulnerability is being exploited via NeedeStart?
If so, may you append the cpe needrestart_project:needrestart?
https://www.qualys.com/2024/11/19/needrestart/needrestart.txt
CVE-2024-10224 is rooted in ScanDeps and needrestart is just the downstream component being influenced by this dependency (see https://github.com/rschupp/Module-ScanDeps/security/advisories/GHSA-g597-359q-v529). We do not add downstream components.
