Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.11.6. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function iwl_mvm_send_recovery_cmd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: mvm: Fix response handling in iwl_mvm_send_recovery_cmd() 1. The size of the response packet is not validated. 2. The response buffer is not freed. Resolve these issues by switching to iwl_mvm_send_cmd_status(), which handles both size validation and frees the buffer.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-53059 since 11/19/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/07/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211777 (Debian dsa-5818 : affs-modules-6.1.0-21-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.285, 5.10.229, 5.15.171, 6.1.116, 6.6.60 or 6.11.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9c98ee7ea463/45a628911d3c/3f45d590ccba/64d63557ded6/3eb986c64c6b/9480c3045f30/07a6e3b78a65 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (211777) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3509). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
