Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.7 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.7 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla 1.7.12 and possibly earlier, Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 and possibly earlier, and Netscape 8.1 and possibly earlier, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the -moz-binding (Cascading Style Sheets) CSS property, which does not require that the style sheet have the same origin as the web page, as demonstrated by the compromise of a large number of LiveJournal accounts.

The bug was discovered 01/28/2006. The weakness was presented 01/28/2006 by Andrew as Bug 324253 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0496 since 01/31/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38518 (Mozilla Firefox XBL -MOZ-BINDING Property Cross-Domain Scripting Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16042. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10118.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24427), Exploit-DB (27150), SecurityFocus (BID 16427†), OSVDB (22924†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015553†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
