Details
A vulnerability was found in GitLab Community Edition and Enterprise Edition up to 17.4.4/17.5.2/17.6.0 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component API Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a algorithmic complexity vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-407. An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
A denial of service (DoS) condition was discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 13.2.4 before 17.4.5, 17.5 before 17.5.3, and 17.6 before 17.6.1. By leveraging this vulnerability an attacker could create a DoS condition by sending crafted API calls. This was a regression of an earlier patch.
The weakness was published by luryus as 443559. The advisory is shared at gitlab.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-11828 since 11/26/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211855 (GitLab 13.2.4 < 17.4.5 / 17.5 < 17.5.3 / 17.6 < 17.6.1 (CVE-2024-11828)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 17.4.5, 17.5.3 or 17.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (211855). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
