Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Free Software Foundation Inc. libtasn1. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component libtasn1. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Tiny ASN.1 Library (libtasn1) before 0.2.18, as used by (1) GnuTLS 1.2.x before 1.2.10 and 1.3.x before 1.3.4, and (2) GNU Shishi, allows attackers to crash the DER decoder and possibly execute arbitrary code via "out-of-bounds access" caused by invalid input, as demonstrated by the ProtoVer SSL test suite.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2006. The weakness was released 02/09/2006 by Evgeny Legerov (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0645 since 02/10/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20934 (GLSA-200602-08 : libtasn1, GNU TLS: Security flaw in DER decoding), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115329 (GNUTLS LibTASN1 DER Decoding Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 0.2.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24606), Tenable (20934), SecurityFocus (BID 16568†), OSVDB (23054†) and Secunia (SA18794†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
