A vulnerability has been found in Citrix Presentation Server up to 4.0 (Connectivity Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block in the library ccprov.dll. The manipulation as part of a Print Request leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the print provider library (cpprov.dll) in Citrix Presentation Server 4.0, MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0, and MetaFrame XP 1.0 allows local users and remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via long arguments to the (1) EnumPrintersW and (2) OpenPrinter functions.
The bug was discovered 01/24/2006. The weakness was published 01/25/2007 with ZDI (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0444 since 01/23/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 364 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115903 (Citrix Presentation Server Arbitrary Code Execution).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.citrix.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3583. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.
