Symantec Web Security up to 3.0.1.85 Error Message cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Security up to 3.0.1.85 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Symantec Web Security (SWS) before 3.0.1.85 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via unspecified vectors related to (1) error messages and (2) blocked page messages produced by SWS.

The weakness was disclosed 01/25/2007 by Mikko Korppi (Website). The advisory is shared at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0563 since 01/30/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25446 (Symantec Web Security (SWS) Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31750), Tenable (25446), SecurityFocus (BID 22184†), OSVDB (32959†) and Secunia (SA23896†). The entries VDB-2876, VDB-34691 and VDB-85132 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
