Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in dotProject 2.0/2.0.1 (Project Management Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file db_adodb.php. The manipulation of the argument dPconfig[root_dir] with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

** DISPUTED ** Multiple PHP remote file include vulnerabilities in dotProject 2.0.1 and earlier, when register_globals is enabled, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via the baseDir parameter in (1) db_adodb.php, (2) db_connect.php, (3) session.php, (4) vw_usr_roles.php, (5) calendar.php, (6) date_format.php, and (7) tasks/gantt.php; and the dPconfig[root_dir] parameter in (8) projects/gantt.php, (9) gantt2.php, and (10) vw_files.php. NOTE: the vendor disputes this issue, stating that the product documentation clearly recommends that the system administrator disable register_globals, and that the check.php script warns against this setting. Also, the vendor says that the protection.php/siteurl vector is incorrect because protection.php does not exist in the product.

The bug was discovered 02/14/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/17/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0755 since 02/18/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. By approaching the search of inurl:db_adodb.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20925 (dotProject Multiple Scripts Remote File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4212.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24738), Tenable (20925), SecurityFocus (BID 16648†), OSVDB (23209†) and Secunia (SA18879†). The entries VDB-28773, VDB-28771, VDB-31867 and VDB-83528 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
